Custom auto popup bakery boxes, made to your specifications

Auto popup bakery boxes (also called one-piece folding boxes or auto-bottom boxes) are the bakery industry standard for fast, single-motion assembly. The box ships flat to save freight and storage cost, then snaps into shape with one motion at the counter. No taping, no folding flaps, no construction time per box. For high-throughput bakeries, cafes, and donut shops, that assembly speed adds up to real labor savings over time.

At mimipack we manufacture auto popup bakery boxes in 15+ standard sizes from 5x5x2 up to 16x11.5x3, plus fully custom sizing to match your specific product. We run them in kraft brown and white, in a range of paperboard weights from economy to premium feel, with one to four color custom printing for your branding. Send us a sample of what you currently use and we'll match the construction, weight, and finish; or send us your specs and we'll produce to them.

How we build to your spec

Most custom packaging orders start with a reference. You send us a sample box (or a sample from a competitor you'd like to source from), and our team confirms what we can match: dimensions, paperboard caliper, paper grade, construction type, finish, and any specific print requirements. We come back with a quote that reflects your actual spec, not a generic SKU.

If you don't have a reference sample, we work from your specs directly. Tell us the dimensions, the paperboard weight you want, the construction style (single-piece auto popup or multi-piece set-up), and the print method, and we'll quote from there.

Paperboard options

We primarily produce in virgin paperboard rather than recycled stock. Virgin paperboard offers cleaner ink reception for custom printing, more consistent thickness across runs, and stronger structural integrity than recycled stock at the same weight. We can run recycled stock on request for buyers with sustainability requirements that specify it.

Paperboard weight (caliper) is the single biggest driver of perceived quality and cost. Lighter weights produce a more economical box suited for high-volume retail bakeries where unit cost matters most. Heavier weights produce a premium feel and stronger structure suited for higher-end pastry, gifting, and brand-forward packaging. We'll recommend the right weight for your use case based on what your product needs, or match exactly to a sample you send.

Construction types

Single-piece auto popup (one-piece folder): The standard auto popup box. Ships flat, snaps into shape with one motion. Fastest assembly, lowest freight cost per unit, suitable for the vast majority of bakery and food-service applications.

Multi-piece construction: For applications where the auto popup style won't work (deep boxes, specialty constructions, separate lid and base setups), we manufacture multi-piece boxes that ship flat and assemble in two or more steps. Slightly higher per-unit assembly time but allows for constructions the one-piece format can't accommodate.

Printing options

We offer one to four color custom printing on all auto popup box sizes. One-color printing is the most cost-effective option and works well for logo-only or single-color brand applications. Two to four color printing expands the design possibilities for more complex artwork, gradients, and full-color brand systems.

We accept print-ready artwork in vector format (AI, EPS, or PDF) as the cleanest production path. If you have only a logo file or rough design, our team can help prepare it for print at no extra cost. We produce digital proofs of every custom print run for your approval before production starts.

Common use cases for auto popup bakery boxes

The auto popup format works for nearly any flat-bottom bakery or pastry application. Common buyer use cases:

  • Cookie bakeries and packaged cookie brands use sizes 6x6x3 and 8x8x3 for assortments and gift packs.
  • Cupcake shops typically order 7x7x3 for 4-counts and 10x10x4 for dozen-counts.
  • Cake slice and pastry counters use 5x5x2, 5x8x2, and 7x5x2 for single-serve to-go.
  • Donut shops and bagel cafes order larger formats (14x10x3 and 16x11.5x3) for half-dozen and dozen counts. Note: if your primary application is donuts, you may also want to look at our dedicated donut box line, which is purpose-built for donut display and stacking.
  • Multi-location bakery operators and chain restaurant brands standardize on a small set of sizes across stores, with consistent branding printed across the line. We work with operators on volume runs and repeat orders for ongoing supply.
  • Specialty food brands and packaged goods use auto popup boxes for branded retail packaging on cookies, brownies, granola, and similar bakery-style products sold in retail or DTC.

Stock and custom orders

We carry limited stock of kraft and white auto popup boxes in our most common sizes for buyers who need standard packaging without custom printing. Stock orders ship faster than custom runs and are suited for buyers who need plain boxes for in-store branding (stickers, sleeves, tags) rather than printed packaging.

The majority of our production is custom-printed orders to buyer specifications. If you're planning a custom run, the quote process is straightforward: tell us your size, quantity, paperboard weight, print method, and any reference samples, and we'll come back with pricing and lead times within one business day.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum order quantity for custom-printed bakery boxes?

Our standard minimum for custom-printed auto popup bakery boxes is 5,000 units per design. This reflects the production setup required for custom printing runs. Stock kraft and white boxes in standard sizes are available at lower quantities.

How long does a custom order take?

Lead times depend on the size, quantity, paperboard weight, and print method. One-color print runs produce faster than four-color CMYK. We confirm specific lead times on every quote so you can plan around your launch or restock date. As a rough range, most custom orders ship in three to six weeks from artwork approval; faster on stock items.

Can I match a sample box I already have?

Yes. This is our most common production workflow. Send us a sample of the box you'd like to match, and our team will confirm what we can replicate: dimensions, paperboard caliper, construction type, paper grade, and finish. We'll come back with a quote based on the matched spec.

Do you offer samples before I commit to an order?

Yes. We send unprinted samples of our standard auto popup boxes so you can confirm size, paperboard weight, and construction quality before placing a custom order. For custom-printed orders, we produce digital proofs of your artwork on the actual box layout for your approval before production starts.

What artwork format do you need for custom printing?

Vector format (AI, EPS, or PDF) is preferred for the cleanest print quality. We can also work with high-resolution raster files (300 DPI or higher) for some applications. If you only have a logo file or rough design, our team can prepare print-ready artwork from what you have.

What's the difference between auto popup and other bakery box constructions?

Auto popup boxes (also called one-piece folders or auto-bottom boxes) ship flat and snap into shape with one motion, no taping or flap folding required. They're the fastest to assemble and the most freight-efficient for shipping flat to your location. Other constructions like two-piece set-up boxes have separate lid and base components, which allow for deeper or specialty form factors but require more assembly time per box. Auto popup is the standard for high-throughput bakery and food-service applications.

Are these boxes food-safe?

Yes. Our paperboard meets food-grade standards appropriate for direct contact with baked goods and pastries. Our printing inks are food-safe and compliant for the intended use.

Can I see how my logo will look before I order?

Yes. We offer a free online design studio where you can upload your logo and see it placed on the actual bakery box. You can adjust size and position, view both flat and 3D previews, and request a quote directly from the studio once you're happy with the placement.
